The toothpaste aisle is full of promises on the front of the tube: whitening, fresh breath, enamel this, gum that. The most useful number is usually on the back, in small print. Here’s what to look for, kept short.
The short answer
According to the NHS, adults should use a toothpaste that contains at least 1,350 parts per million (ppm) fluoride. Check the packaging to find out how much a brand contains.
1. Find the ppm on the back
Look in the ingredients or small print for a figure in “ppm F” or “ppm fluoride”. Many everyday UK family toothpastes list 1,450ppm, which is above the NHS minimum for adults.
2. One tube can do for the family
The NHS says children don’t need special children’s toothpaste. Children of all ages can use family toothpaste as long as it contains 1,350 to 1,500ppm fluoride. Children aged 3 and under who don’t have tooth decay can use a lower-strength children’s toothpaste with at least 1,000ppm. Under-3s need just a smear; 3 to 6 year olds, a pea-sized blob.
3. Stronger pastes are a dentist’s call
Your dentist may advise a toothpaste with a higher concentration of fluoride if you need it. That’s a conversation for them, not something to pick off a shelf.
4. Spit, don’t rinse
The NHS advises spitting out excess toothpaste after brushing and not rinsing straight away, because rinsing washes away the concentrated fluoride left behind. If you like mouthwash, use it at a different time, such as after lunch.
5. Then pick what you’ll actually use
Once the fluoride number is right, the rest is mostly preference: a flavour you like, a texture that doesn’t bother you, a price that works. A paste you enjoy is a paste you’ll reach for. If you want somewhere to start browsing:

Always double-check the ppm on the listing or the tube itself.
